Rena is the reigning MRS TEXAS UNITED AMERICA 2009. She will spend the year promoting her platform "Cancer - Education and early detection are the best weapons." Having watched several friends and family members fight courageous battles with cancer, she is devoted to spreading the message that survival rates increase when cancerous conditions are detected in the early stages. Rena continues to devote her time to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and truly believes that we will one day find a cure for cancer.
Rena is also working to bring increased awareness to the Lupus Foundation of America. She was diagnosed with Lupus in her early twenties, and she knows firsthand how debilitating a disorder Lupus is. It is difficult to diagnose, and there currently is no cure. She wants to reach out to others, especially young people with the disorder, and let them know that life doesn’t have to end when the diagnosis begins. She hopes to serve as an inspiration to those who are battling this disease.
After a rewarding career as a firefighter and paramedic, Rena left the medical field to pursue a degree in accounting. She holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting and is working toward designation as a Certified Management Accountant. She works for the Texas Association of School Boards, a non-profit organization that promotes educational excellence for Texas schoolchildren through advocacy, visionary leadership, and high quality services to school districts. While Rena does not have children of her own, she believes that the children of today are our future, and that it’s everyone’s responsibility to do their part to ensure that children receive the best education possible.
Rena is married to the love of her life, Alan, and they have a 6 year old yellow lab Charlie. They adopted Charlie from a shelter in Lockhart, Texas. Rena encourages everyone to find a place in their hearts and homes for the unwanted pets of the world, even if it means volunteering some time at a local shelter.
Keep an eye out for Rena around Texas in the next year. She’ll be making several appearances, and helping out many, wonderful organizations with missions to make a difference in the lives of others!
